Jenny Saville

(1970-), Artist

Sitter in 2 portraits
Saville's figurative work can perhaps be seen as a continuation of Lucian Freud's research into existential painting. Great slabs of paint combined at times with words gouged out of the surface take these works into a more subversive realm. Born in Cambridge, Saville studied at the Glasgow School of Art, exhibiting in Contemporary '90 at the Royal College of Art midway through her course. Her work was in the iconic Royal Academy Sensation exhibition in 1997, and in 1999 her first solo show was met with critical success. She has since exhibited at the Gagosian Gallery and Kunsthaus Zürich. In 2012 a solo exhibition of her work was held at Modern Art Oxford and the Ashmolean Museum. She lives and works in Italy.
