Wearing was born in Birmingham and trained at Goldsmith's College, London. Her work, Signs that say what you want them to say not signs that say what someone else wants you to say (1992-3), in which members of the public were photographed holding signs of their thoughts, was a hit in the art and advertising worlds. It prompted Wearing to explore further the tensions between public and private behaviour. In 1997, she won the Turner Prize and in 2007 was elected a member of the Royal Academy of Arts. She was honoured with a mid-career retrospective at the Serpentine Gallery, London, in 2000, and in 2017, Gillian Wearing and Claude Cahun: Behind the mask, another mask was shown at the National Portrait Gallery.
