Born at his ancestral home the Moti Bagh Palace, Patiala, he succeeded his father upon his death as Maharaja of Patiala. Educated at the prestigious Aitchison College, Lahore, he took over the Government in 1910.. As a leader of the Sikhs in India, took a prominent part in the Great War and Indian affairs. He was chancellor of the Indian Chamber of Princes (1926-30) and in the latter year led the Indian States delegation at the Round Table Conference in London. He was well known as a cricketer and was also instrumental as a populariser of the game in India.
