Francis Newton Souza

(1924-2002), Painter

Sitter in 12 portraits
Born in Goa, Francis Newton Souza was a founding member of the Progressive Artists Group, encouraging Indian artists to participate in art internationally. He initially received little recognition following his move to London in 1949. However, in 1954 Stephen Spender's Encounter magazine published Souza's autobiographical essay Nirvana of a Maggot and that same year Souza was included in a group exhibition at the Institute of Contemporary Arts, where Victor Musgrave became aware of his work. Gallery One held Souza's first solo, sell-out, show in February 1955, and he continued to show there until 1963.
