Artist associated with 65 portraits
Richard Bentley's father Edward Bentley and his uncle John Nichols jointly owned the General Evening Post. After serving an apprenticeship with his uncle, Bentley initially set up a printing establishment with his older brother, antiquarian Samuel Bentley. In 1829, however, he went into partnership with publisher Henry Colburn. After several failures, they published the highly successful monthly Standard Novels series, which ran for over twenty years. Colburn retired in 1832 and Bentley continued the business on his own. In 1837, he launched Bentley's Miscellany, which, for the first three years of its existence, was edited by Charles Dickens. Oliver Twist was first published in monthly instalments in the pages of the Miscellany.
