Director of the Scottish National Portrait Gallery from 1997 until his retirement in 2012, he joined as Deputy Keeper in 1983. Began his career as a Research Assistant at the National Gallery of Scotland in 1972 and went on to be Assistant Keeper at the National Museum of Wales from 1980 until 1983. He was awarded a CBE in 2012.
