Publications include The Early Flemish Pictures in the Collection of Her Majesty the Queen (1985), Renaissance Portraits; European Portrait-Painting in the 14th, 15th and 16th Centuries (1990) and The Fifteenth Century Netherlandish Schools (1998), a catalogue of the works from the period held by the National Gallery, which includes histories and iconographies.

He went to school at Dollar Academy where his father Ian Campbell was the Art teacher. He grew up in Dollar and has two sisters, Lorna a couple of years younger and Catriona a few years older.
