Elam was a lecturer in History of Art at Westfield College (1976-87) until she became editor of the Burlington (1987-2002). Her editorial style was marked by a meticulous and rigorous attention to the submissions of contributors, and by the bold, clear tone of her monthly editorials, which focussed on issues of the day as they affected the international art world. Elam is currently Andrew W. Mellon Professor at the Center for Advance Study in the Visual Arts, National Gallery Washington. She is currently editing Roger Fry's writing on Italian art for publication.
