The daughter of Lord Aldington and Araminta MacMichael, Jane, Lady Roberts was educated at Queen Mary, University of London and the Courtauld Institute of Art. In 1975 she became the curator of the Print Room at the Royal Library, Windsor Castle, where she produced the catalogue of the exhibition Leonardo da Vinci: Anatomical Drawings, shown at the Royal Academy 1977-8. She was the co-author of the catalogue Holbein and the Court of King Henry VIII for the exhibition at the Queen's Gallery, 1978-9. She was the Royal Librarian from 2002 until her retirement in 2013. Her many books include Leonardo (1981), Royal Artists (1987) and Ten Religious Masterpieces (2000).
