Harry Corbett

(1918-1989), Entertainer; creator of 'Sooty'

Sitter in 8 portraits
Sooty began his show business career in 1948 when he was purchased by the one-time electrical engineer turned amateur pianist and magician, Harry Corbett, for 7/6d on Blackpool's North pier. Originally named 'Teddy', with the addition of chimney soot to his ears and nose to enhance his character, he was re-christened and appeared on BBC's talent night joining Harry Corbett's magic act. Their successful double-act was joined by other characters including Kipper the cat, Butch the dog, Ramsbottom the snake and the controversial female panda Soo who did all the housework. In 1975 Matthew Corbett followed on as Sooty's partner.
