Mayne developed his interest in photography whilst studying chemistry at Oxford (1947-51), where he met the photographer Hugo van Wadenoyen, and exhibited with the Combined Societies group (1951-55). In 1955 Mayne moved to Addison Avenue, North Kensington and began to photograph people of nearby Southam Street. The resulting Photographs from London drew the attention of novelist Colin MacInnes, who chose Mayne to make the cover image for his celebrated book Absolute Beginners (1959). Additional work appeared in The Sunday Times, The Observer, and the photo essay The Teenage Thing, was published in Vogue in 1959, when Mayne began to photograph writers of the Royal Court Theatre.
