Giuseppe Garibaldi

(1807-1882), Italian soldier; played central role in unification of Italy

Sitter associated with 23 portraits
Garibaldi was an Italian politician, general and nationalist. He was a pivotal figure in unifying the various states of the Italian peninsula under one monarchy in 1861. By the mid-1860s, Garibaldi had become a celebrated figure in Britain. He was greeted by ecstatic crowds who lined the streets when he visited in 1864. The British-made Garibaldi biscuit was named after him.
