Italian general, politician and nationalist who played a pivotal role in the unification of Italy. Born in Nice, he was christened Joseph-Marie Garibaldi on 4 July 1807. Drawn into life at sea by his family's involvement with coastal trade, he was certified as a merchant navy captain in 1832. The following year in Russia he met Giovanni Battista Cuneo a politically active immigrant and member of the secret Young Italy movement of Giuseppe Mazzini. Garibaldi joined the society taking an oath dedicating himself to the struggle to liberate and unify his homeland free from Austrian dominance.
