Arthur Joseph Davis

Architect. Senior partner in the firm Mewes and Davis, with Charles Mewes. Studied at Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris in the 1880s. The firm designed the construction and decoration of the London Ritz Hotel and and private commissions such as Luton Hoo for Sir Julius Wernher, Coombe Court for Lady De Grey and Polesden Lacey for Mrs Ronald Greville. After the death of Belgian-born Mewes in 1914 Davis served in World War One before working on a number of Banks and ocean liners such as the Aquitania (1911-4) and the Queen Mary (1935).
