Gertrude Stein

Gertrude Stein had moved from Pennsylvania to Vienna and Paris by the time she was three. It was in Paris, during the 1920s that she established a salon with her life partner Alice B. Toklas, who would host the avant-garde writers and artists at their home. Along with her brother, she formed an important collection of artists work including Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse. Her interest in free association is reflected in her experimental writing style, as is the unconventional approach of the artists whose paintings she collected. Stein's first book Q.E.D, recounted her lesbian affair while studying medicine and was published posthumously in 1950. The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas, which took on the voice of Alice, brought her mainstream attention.
