Best known for her operas including A Night at the Chinese Opera (1987) and The Vanishing Bridegroom (1990), Weir has also written orchestral and chamber music. She has drawn on medieval history and her Scottish heritage. Her music has been compared to that of both Benjamin Britten and Leoš Janácek. Weir is considered to be Britain's foremost female composer and in 2008 the BBC Symphony Orchestra presented a weekend festival of her music.
