Richardson became associate artistic director at the Royal Court from 1956 to 1964, where he came to prominence directing the first production of Look Back in Anger by John Osborne (1956). Other plays he directed include Osborne's The Entertainer, Ionesco's The Chairs (1957) and Middleton and Rowley's The Changeling (1961). His films include Tom Jones (1963), for which he won an Oscar.
