Born in Remscheid, Germany, Tillmans studied at Bournemouth & Poole College of Art and Design. In the 1990s he moved to London and began work as a fashion photographer for magazines such as The Face and i-D, developing his 'snapshot' aesthetic. From the outset he ignored the traditional separation of art in galleries from other published images. He published his books Concorde (1997) and Soldiers (1998), edited The Big Issue and in 2000 became the first photographer to win the Turner Prize. His work has been shown at the Museum of Modern Art, New York in 1996 and at Tate Britain, London, in major retrospectives in 2003 and 2017. A monograph was published by Phaidon to coincide with his 2003 exhibition.
