Glynis Johns
(1923-2024), ActressSitter in 14 portraits
South African-born daughter of the Welsh actor Mervyn John, Glynis made her stage debut at twelve and her first film appearance in South Riding (1938). Made memorable appearances in 49th Parallel (1941), An Ideal Husband (1947) Miranda (playing the mermaid title role) in 1948. From the mid 1950s Johns appeared in a number of Hollywood films and in 1963 starred in her own TV series Glynis. In 1964 she starred alongside Julie Andrews in Mary Poppins as Mrs Winifred Banks for which she won a Laurel Award. Nominated for an Oscar in 1960 as supporting actress in The Sundowners (1960) and in 1973 won a Tony for her performance in the Broadway production of A Little Night Music.
