Founder and Director of Programmes, Schumacher College and Editor of Resurgence and Ecologist Magazine (an international magazine promoting peace, sustainability and holistic philosophy). Born in Rajasthan, India, Kumar left his family home aged 9 to become a Jain monk. Realising he could achieve more back in the world, he left the mendicant order at 18 to become a student of Vinoba Bhave, a disciple of Gandhi. Inspired by the example of British peace activist Bertrand Russell, he set out on an 8,000 mile 'Peace Walk' with E. P. Menon, from India to the four capitals of the nuclear-armed countries - Washington, London, Paris and Moscow (1962-64). His autobiography, No Destination(1978), has sold over 50,000 copies.
