Satish Kumar
(1936-), Director of Programmes, Schumacher College; Editor of Resurgence MagazineSitter in 1 portrait
Born in Rajasthan, India, Kumar left his family home at the age of nine to become a Jain monk. Realising he could achieve more back in the world, he left the mendicant order at eighteen years old to become a student of Vinoba Bhave, a disciple of Gandhi. Inspired by the example of British peace activist Bertrand Russell, he set out on an 8,000 mile 'Peace Walk' with E.P. Menon, from India to the four capitals of the nuclear-armed countries - Washington, London, Paris and Moscow (1962-64). His autobiography, No Destination (1978), has sold over 50,000 copies.
