Queen Helen was the mother of King Michael of Romania (1921 - 2017).
During the period when Romania was allied to Nazi Germany (1941- 44) Queen Helen was responsible, at great personal risk, for saving the lives of thousands of Romanian Jews threatened with deportation and death. In 1993, the Holocaust Memorial Authority, Yad Vashem, declared Queen Helen a Righteous Among the Nations in recognition of her efforts to protect Romania's Jewish community. .
