Having studied at St Martin's School of Art, Goldsmiths and the Slade School of Fine Art, Gormley's career began with his 1981 solo exhibition at Whitechapel Gallery. He won the Turner Prize in 1994 for Field for the British Isles, featuring 40,000 clay figures made by the public. He is an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects, an Honorary Doctor of the University of Cambridge and a Fellow of two Cambridge colleges. He became a Royal Academician in 2003 and was knighted in 2014. His oeuvre comprises sculpture, drawing, installations, major public works such as the Angel of the North (1998) and commissions that invite participation. His work has been exhibited UK-wide and internationally.
