George Hurrell

After studying at the Art Institute of Chicago, George Hurrell was commissioned to photograph paintings and painters in Laguna Beach, California, which was an art colony at the time. His photographs came to the attention of MGM studios, which in 1930 appointed him head of the MGM portrait gallery. Over the next two years he photographed every star at the studio. After the Second World War, Hurrell moved to New York, where he continued shooting advertising and fashion photographs through the 1950s. From 1965, his work has been exhibited at museums throughout the world. He published The Hurrell Style in 1976, followed by other commemorative books and special edition prints of his work.
