Pope was originally an artist's model, often posing for her husband Francis Wheatley. During his decline in health and after his death, she began to teach drawing to support her family. She was encouraged by Sir John Soane through a commission and access to students including Princess Sophia of Gloucester. Pope began painting miniatures and Dutch style paintings of flowers before becoming a botanical illustrator. For the publisher of Botanical Magazine, Samuel Curtis, she produced monumental aquatints, hand-coloured in watercolour for his Monograph of the Genus Camellia, 1819, and become a celebrated botanical illustrator. In 1807, she became the third wife of the painter and actor Alexander Pope.
