Geoffrey Palmer worked in an imports office and then as an accountant before he was persuaded to join the local amateur dramatics society. Eventually he became a popular star of sitcoms such as The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin, Butterflies and As Time Goes By. His film appearances included The Outsider (1979), The Honorary Consul (1983), The Madness of King George (1994), A Zed and Two Noughts (1985) as well as playing Admiral Roebuck in a number of James Bond films. He was also the narrator for the television series Grumpy Old Men. He was awarded the OBE in 2005.
