Gentleman-scholar and connoisseur. Educated at Trinity College, Oxford. His early books include the acclaimed volume Drawings of Richard Wilson (1951) and English Taste in the Eighteenth Century (1956). Most publicly associated was the National Art Collections Fund, which he joined in 1927 and became chairman from 1975 to 1980, during which time he helped save more than 200 works of art.
