Born Krishna Bhanji in Snaiton near Scarborough in Yorkshire. Came to prominence when he joined the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1967 appearing in numerous productions in their classic repertoire. His performance as the title-role in Richard Attenborough's film Gandhi (1982) won him Best Actor Oscar and a British Academy award. Subsequent films have included Betrayal (1983), Turtle Diary (1985), Maurice (1987), Bugsy (1992), Schindler's List (1993), Photographing Fairies (1997) and Sexy Beast (2001). Knighted in 2002.
