Francis Frith

(1822-1898), Photographer

Sitter in 1 portrait
Artist of 1 portrait
Francis Frith started as a grocer in Liverpool. He became independently wealthy on selling his grocery business in 1855 and turned his attention to photography. Frith made three journeys to the Middle East from 1857 to 1860 and kept diaries of his trips, highlighting the appalling conditions under which he worked. His superb photographs reveal none of this. On his return to the UK, he set up a photographic company to photograph tourist views in the British Isles, which became a thriving family business lasting until the 1970s.
