Sitter in 4 portraits
Writer and librettist. Born in Southwark, Myfanwy Evans studied at North London Collegiate School and St Hugh's College, Oxford before meeting the artist John Piper. Together they founded the art magazine Axis (1935-7), which helped place the Pipers at the forefront of the avant-garde. Her publications included the anthology Sea Poems (1945) and a study of Frances Hodgkins (1948). In 1953 she was asked by Benjamin Britten to write the libretto for The Turn of the Screw, followed by Owen Wingrave (1971) and Death in Venice (1973). She collaborated with composers Alun Hoddinott and Malcolm Williamson on further librettos.
