Broadcaster and composer, and son of the composer Sir Lennox Berkeley. Berkeley is a regular presenter of arts programmes for BBC radio and television, including the interview programme, Private Passions, on Radio 3. After studying under Richard Rodney Bennett in his late twenties, Berkeley established his reputation through works including concertos for organ and clarinet and The Garden of Earthly Delights (1998) for orchestra. He collaborated with author Ian McEwan on the oratorio Or Shall We Die? (1983) and the opera For You (2008). He is a composer of two operas: Baa Baa Black Sheep (1993) and Jane Eyre (2000), both with librettos written by David Malouf.
