Recognised as a pioneer in the advancements of colour photography in the late Victorian and Edwardian periods. Acland was introduced to photography at an early age when she was photographed with her friend Ina Liddell by Lewis Carroll. At 19, Acland met the photographer Julia Margaret Cameron and began to take up portrait photography herself, with eminent subjects including John Ruskin and William Gladstone. Acland began using the Ives Kromskop process, taking separate photographs through red, green and blue filters and the Autochrome process of using coloured transparent images on glass. Acland received great acclaim for the photographs she took in Gibraltar, which were displayed at the Royal Photographic Society in 1905.
