Buju Banton (Mark Myrie)
(1973-), Musician, Jamican ReggaeSitter in 1 portrait
Born in a deprived neighbourhood of Salt Lane in Kingston, Jamaica, he took the name Buju Banton, releasing singles from 1988. His album Mr. Mention instantly became the best-selling album in Jamaican history. Signed by Mercury Records, he released Voice of Jamaica (1993). His socio-political tracks on the album led him to be invited to meet Jamaican Prime Minister P. J. Patterson, and won him several music awards that year. By the mid-1990's he converted to Rastafarianism which began influencing his music, resulting in a more introspective relaxed style. His 10th album Before the Dawn, won Best Reggae Album at the Grammy Awards (2010). In 2011 he was imprisoned for 10 years on drug charges.
