Rudolph Dolmetsch was the eldest son of Arnold Dolmetsch, the early-music pioneer and his third wife Mabel. He was born in Cambridge, Mass. USA. He had a brilliant career as a virtuoso harpsichordist and viola da gamba player. He attended the Royal College of Music, where his archive is lodged, and studied conducting with Sir Adrian Boult. A number of his compositions survive and are being revived. During the 1939-1945 war he served in the Royal Artillery and was lost at sea in December 1942.
