General Sir John Asser is referenced in André Maurois' (the author of 'Colonel Bramble's Silence' and 'Fattypuffs and Thinnifers' ) memoirs as "A superb giant of a man, who had been the commander-in-chief in the Sudan, with taut eyebrows over eyes which remained half shut by the Egyptian sun and was, as Kipling said, a presence." my translation from the French.
