Stephanus Johannes Paulus ('Paul') Kruger
(1825-1904), President of the Transvaal RepublicSitter in 7 portraits
First elected President of the Transvaal Republic in 1883, Paul Kruger was a leader of Boer resistance against the British during the war. Affectionately known as 'Uncle Paul' (Oom Paul in Afrikaans), he went on to win the subsequent elections of 1888, 1893 and 1898. Kruger tried to negotiate favourable terms for the Boers, but when war seemed inevitable he sent an ultimatum to Britain on 9 October 1899. Strategic decisions thereafter mainly fell to Petrus Jacobus Joubert as Vice President and Commandant-General. Kruger fled to Europe after the capture of the capital of Pretoria in June 1900, and the Republic fell to Lord Roberts' army.
