James Wong Howe

(1899-1976), Cinematographer

Sitter in 1 portrait
Chinese-born American cinematographer. Born Wong Tung Jim in Canton Province, China, Howe moved to America with his family in 1904 to join his father who was working on the Northern Pacific Railways. Settling in Washington, the family owned a convenience store. Howe's interest in photography was sparked when he was given a Brownie camera. His career in film-making began when he was employed at a film studio lab in Los Angeles. This access to the film industry enabled him to take photographs of stars to earn extra income. Howe made over 130 films, becoming one of the leading and most inventive cinematographers in Hollywood between the 1930s and 1940s. He won two Academy Awards for cinematography in The Rose Tattoo (1955) and Hud (1963) but has been nominated for 10 Academy Awards in total.
