Labour Party politician and member of the House of Lords. Shami Chakrabarti was formerly Director of the human rights pressure group Liberty (2003-16). She studied Law and became a barrister before joining the Home Office Legal Adviser's Branch in 1996. In 1998 she was one of the officials responsible for the implementation of the Human Rights Act. Chakrabarti was Chancellor of Oxford Brooks University (2008-15) and the University of Essex (2013-17). She was created a life peer in 2016.
