Holmes was a sergeant in the British Army before becoming a full-time athlete. In 1998 she was awarded an MBE for services to the Military and since 1994 she has won twelve medals at the Commonwealth Games, European and World Championships as well as the Olympic Games. At the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens she won gold in both 800m and 1,500m. Holmes received the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award in 2004. She was made Dame Commander of the British Empire in 2005. Holmes is the Director of her own company, Double Gold Enterprises, and Founder and Chair of the Dame Kelly Holmes Legacy Trust, a charity which seeks to create life chances for young people through sport.
