Braun & Co (Adolphe Braun)

Artist associated with 5 portraits
Born in Besançon, France, in 1812, Braun began his career in textiles. It was only in the 1850s that he published several hundred photographic prints as part of a series featuring various plants and flowers. Thereafter recognised as a leader in the field of photography, Braun became the official photographer of Pope Pius IX and established a studio in Paris in 1868. He also travelled extensively, capturing images of dramatic mountain cliffs as well as various European city scenes. Upon his death in 1877, his son, Gaston (1845-1928), took over his practice. The National Portrait Gallery holds three of Braun's photographs.
