Helen Sharman
(1963-), Astronaut; ChemistSitter in 2 portraits
Sharman received a BSc in chemistry from the University of Sheffield in 1984 and a PhD from Birkbeck, University of London. She worked first as an engineer and then as a chemist for Mars Confectionery Ltd. Chosen from 13,000 applicants to participate in Project Juno - a joint Soviet-Union and British space mission - she was the first woman and Briton to visit space in 1991. She has since contributed widely to science, becoming Operations Manager for the Department of Chemistry at Imperial College London in 2015. In 1993 she received an OBE and was made an honorary Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry. She published an autobiography, Seize the Moment, in 1993 and a children's book, The Space Place, in 1997.
