E.H. Mills

(1874-1942), Photographer

Ernest Herbert ('E.H.') Mills

Artist associated with 54 portraits
As a photographer based in Hampstead, London, Ernest Herbert Mills specialised in working on location as an 'at home photographer'. Working for W.T. Stead, he photographed Cecil Rhodes, General Botha and Andrew Carnegie as well as taking a celebrated series of Royal Academicians in their studios in 1902. Mills described himself as an 'artist-entertainer' and produced theatre posters, cartoons and caricatures of subjects that he also photographed. In the 1930s he moved to Worthing, where he drew cartoons and painted as well as constructing toy theatres and making cartoon films.

E H Mills was born in Wellingborough Northants. He was the son of William Folkes Mills who was an ironmonger although in later years he described himself as 'artist'. One of William's brothers (Edward Mills) and therefore Ernest's uncle, was a professional artist who exhibited 12 times in the Royal Academy Summer exhibition between the years 1893 and 1918. Ernest described himself as 'artist' in the 1891 census when he was only 16 although the enumerator wrote 'photographer' over it - Ernest clearly had no doubt about the artistry of the photographic medium.

I'm delighted to have learnt more about him from this website.

Do you know anything about E.H. Mills library and bibliophile interests? I have a complete set of the auction catalogues from the famous Hamilton Palace Library sales in the 1880ties. There is a simple ex libris in gold on a black background just saying: Ex Libris E. H. Mills. I cannot promise, that there might not have been another E.H.Mills. He must have been a bibliophile to have a complete set of Sotheby's auction catalogues from this famous auction.

Kind regards

Chairman of the Danish Bibliophile Club
