Louis Jacobs

(1920-2006), Rabbi and theologian

Sitter in 2 portraits
Rabbi Dr Louis Jacobs was a theologian, preacher and scholar. Born in Manchester, Jacobs was appointed minister of the New West End synagogue in Bayswater in 1954. He caused controversy with his book We Have Reason to Believe (1957), which questioned fundamental beliefs, and for which he was expelled from the United Synagogue. From 1964, he served as an independent orthodox rabbi at the New London Synagogue. In 2006, Jacobs was voted 'the greatest British Jew of all time', for his inspirational and liberal teachings.
