Helen was the younger sister of sculptor Stephen Tomlin (1901-1937).

Helen (Tomlin) Goldby (1906-2000) married Frank Goldby, son of a pharmacist, in 1932. He taught medicine in Hong King and Australia, and returned to the UK after WW2 to teach at Cambridge and at St Mary's Hospital, London. There were six children. Through her sculptor brother she came to know figures in the larger Bloomsbury set. Carrington ran into her in the National Gallery in 1929 in the company of Saxon Sydney-Turner and Barbara Bagenal (Letters, ed. D. Garnett p. 404). During the war she urged Barbara Bagenal to come to Australia to escape the blitz.
