Mary Frances Scott-Siddons
(1844-1896), ActressSitter in 28 portraits
Scott-Siddons was an actress and theatre reader whose great-grandmother was the 18th-century actress Sarah Siddons. She was born in India where her father was a British East India Company soldier. Scott-Siddons made her professional debut in Nottingham in 1866, playing Portia in Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice. She drew huge audiences in London but toured with less success in America, Australia and New Zealand. This prompted her to return to London where she briefly took up the management of the Haymarket Theatre.
