Antony Kenneth ('Tony') Blackburn

The son of a Dorset doctor, Tony Blackburn made his first public appearance with the Ian Ralfini Dance Orchestra at the Bournemouth Pavilion while at college. In 1964 he made his first radio appearance on Radio Caroline; he joined the pirate station Radio London two years later. When BBC Radio 1 commenced broadcasting in 1967, Blackburn presented the daily Breakfast Show and was the first disc jockey on the new network. He remained with Radio 1 until 1984. He subsequently worked for Radio London and Capital Radio, and returned to the BBC in 2004. Blackburn has won thirty-six awards for broadcasting including, in 1989, the Gold Award for Outstanding Contribution to Radio.
