Sheikh Muhammad el Amin el Kanemi

(1776-1837), Scholar; ruler of Bornu (later Nigeria)

Sitter in 1 portrait
Islamic scholar, teacher, religious and political leader who advised the mais (emperors), restored Borno's independence from Fulani domination in the 1820s and eventually supplanted the Sayfawa dynasty and it's Kanem-Borno Empire. In 1846, Al-Kanemi's son Umar I ibn Muhammad el-Amin proclaimed himself as the first shehu (ruler) of Borno. The event marked the end of the Sayfawa dynasty's eight hundred year rule in which they had made Borno their capital and a centre for Islamic scholarship. The current Shehu of Borno, whose seat remains in modern Borno State, Nigeria, is descended from Amin el-Kanemi.
