Celia Paul

(1959-), Artist

Sitter in 4 portraits
Artist of 2 portraits
Born in Tivandrum, India, Paul attended the Slade School of Art, London (1976- 1981). She formed a relationship with her tutor Lucian Freud, in many of whose paintings she appears. Paul's own paintings use muted, earth tones and are often set in domestic environs. Their emotional intensity has drawn comparisons with Gwen John. As well as several solo shows at Marlborough Fine Art, London, Paul has exhibited at the annual Corner exhibition in Copenhagen. Her exhibition Stillness was held at Abbot Hall, Kendal, Cumbria in 2004, and a retrospective at the Graves Art Gallery, Sheffield, 2005. Her work is in public collections including the British Museum, the V&A and the Metropolitan Museum, New York.
