McDaniels, together with Joseph ('Run)' Simmons and Jason Mizell formed Run-DMC in 1981 in their hometown of Queen's, New York. Run-DMC. were the first hip hop group to have a gold album, to be nominated for a Grammy award and to earn a platinum record. Their music videos introduced them to a wider audience courtesy of MTV. They performed at Live Aid (1985), the only hip hop group to do so. In 2007, MTV.com named Run-DMC as "The Greatest Hip Hop Group of All Time", they have sold over 230 Million records world wide. McDaniels' candid and inspirational autobiography Ten Ways Not to Kill Yourself is a moving memoir about his struggles with success, addiction and depression.
