Sitter in 5 portraits
Hopi Native American long distance runner. Tewanima grew up on a reservation in Arizona. In 1907 he was sent to Carlisle India School in New Mexico where he trained with fellow teammate Jim Thorpe, winning numerous races. In 1912 he won silver in the 10,000m at the Stockholm Olympics. After this achievement he largely gave up running to return to his reservation to farm. He was later selected for the US Olympic track and field team in 1954 and inducted into the Arizona Sports Hall of Fame in 1957. The annual Louis Tewanima Footrace is dedicated to him, it is a 5K addition to the 10k Second Mesa race which usually takes place on the Sunday of Labour Day weekend in the US.

Carlisle Indian School was in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, not New Mexico. Louis Tewanima was first sent for schooling from Arizona to Fort Wingate in New Mexico and then on to Carlisle Indian School in Pennsylvania where he was on the track team with Jim Thorpe.
